The 8th Annual “DC Loves Dilla Tribute Concert” is a benefit concert for the J Dilla Foundation and The Lupus Foundation of Greater Washington, DC. The benefit concert will take place on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at The Howard Theatre.
Who was J Dilla aka James Dewitt Yancey, and what impact did he have on the music industry? If you are a fan of D’Angelo, A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, The Roots, Busta Rhymes, Common, or Kayne West, you have J Dilla to thank for some of the songs by these artist that you call your favorites and the influence that he has had on their music.
Dilla passed away on February 10, 2006 after a three-year battle with lupus.
A genius producer, Dilla was known for doing what others found to be impossible when it came to beat making. How he would sample and chop a beat left many of his fellow producers speechless. Even though Dilla is no longer here with us physically, his legacy has now stretched into the jazz world. Kareem Riggins briefly talks about Dilla’s legacy in an interview he did with Yourstru.ly.

Souls of Mischief
September of 1993 was a great month for hip hop. Actually, 1993 was a great year for hip hop. However, during September of 1993, within in a seven day period, De La Soul released Buhloone Mindstate, Digable Planets’ released “Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space)”, Lords of the Underground released “Here Come the Lords”, KRS-One released “Return of the Boom Bap”, and last but not least, Souls of Mischief released their classic album “93 ’til Infinity”.
Many people do not realize the impact that hip hop artist from Oakland have had on the industry. In addition, the diversity of sounds that were coming out of Oakland in 1993 was mind boggling. Think about it, Too Short, E-40, Mac Dre, and the Souls of Mischief are all from Oakland. Now take a moment and think about each of their styles and sounds, very different. Check out NPR’s excellent story on this topic when you have the chance.
This brings us back to the Souls of Mischief classic album “93 ’til Infinity”. The group is currently on tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of “93 ’til Infinity”. The group will be performing the album in its entirety with a live band at the Rock & Roll Hotel in Washington, DC on Thursday, July 11. It’s not often that you get to hear a classic album performed live. This show should be memorable.
