The 119th running of the Penn Relays took place from April 25 – 27, 2013 in Philadelphia, PA. The event attracted participants and attendees from all over the United States and from around the world. The total attendants for the three day meet was 111,284.
The first Penn Relays took place on April 21, 1895 attracting approximately 5,000 people. Nine relay events were scheduled the first year, four for high schools and prep schools, four for colleges, and a college championship. Today, those numbers have dramatically increased with more than 22,000 entrants annually from 60 countries and more than 425 events taking place.
A total of 205 high schools and 35 colleges represented DC, Maryland, and Virginia. In addition, athletes from Special Olympics Maryland Baltimore County and Special Olympics Maryland St. Mary’s County competed in the Special Olympics 4×100 and the Special Olympics 100m.
Some of the top performances by athletes from DC, Maryland, and Virginia include: Bethany Sachtleben of George Mason University finished first in the College Women’s 10,000m Championship with a time of 34:30.32; Antonella Taylor of Bowie High School finished first in the High School Girls’ Shot Put Championship with a throw of 13.81m (45-3.75); Sean McGorty of Chantilly High School finished first in the High School Boys’ Mile Run Championship with a time of 4:04.47; Patrick Joseph of Loudoun County High School finished third in the High School Boys’ Mile Run Championship with a time of 4:07.88; Vincent Ciattei of Perry Hall High School finished fourth in the High School Boys’ Mile Run Championship with a time of 4:09.27; Felecia Majors of South County High School finished first in the High School Girls’ Long Jump Championship with a jump of 6.17m w (20-3); Sophie Chase of Lake Braddock Secondary School finished first in the High School Girls’ 3000m Championship with a time of 9:35.52; Emma King of Oakdale High School finished second in the High School Girls’ Pole Vault Championship with a vault of 3.90m (12-9.5); Gwen Shaw of Wootton High School finished second in the High School Girls’ 400m Hurdles Championship with a time of 59.97; Thea LaFond of the University of Maryland finished third in the College Women’s Triple Jump Championship with a jump of 13.10m w (42-11.75); Julian Woods of Century High School finished second in the High School Boys’ 400m Hurdles Championship with a time of 52.45.
