Chino Moreno, lead singer of the Deftones, performs at Rams Head Live on Friday, October 26, 2012 in Baltimore, MD.
On Friday, October 26, the Deftones brought their blend of rock/alternative/metal/hip hop music (the bands sound is too unique to put them in one genre) to a sold out crowd at Baltimore’s Ram’s Head Live.
The band, founded in 1988 by lead singer Chino Moreno, lead guitarist Stephen Carpenter, and drummer Abe Cunningham, is currently on tour in support of their seventh studio album, Koi No Yokan. The album will be released on Tuesday, November 13 on Warner Bros. Records.
The sold out crowd at Rams Head Live were treated to a bright lights, big sound, high energy in your face show, which I do not think they minded one bit.
From the very start, lead singer Chino Moreno took to the platform at the very front of the stage. Inches from the fans leaning over the barricade in the front row, with his signature mic chord draped over his shoulders, Moreno and his band mates did not waste anytime bringing the energy in the room to a ten as they launched into their first song of the night “Diamond Eyes”. By the time the band was mid-way through the song, Moreno and bassist Sergio Vega were bouncing all over the place as the crowd responded in the same manor.
Once the band hit their groove, they never looked back. It wasn’t full steam ahead, the band nor the crowd would be able to handle that, instead it was a nice fast pace that kept the audience wondering what was next. In addition, the intimacy of Ram’s Head Live made it feel like the band was performing in someones living room. This was especially true when Moreno sat down at the very front of the stage and talked with the audience as the band played in the background.
This night at Ram’s Head Live, the fans in the audience ranged from teenagers to mom’s and dad’s. And with the band pulling songs from Adrenaline (1995), Around the Fur (1997), White Pony (2000), Deftones (2003), Saturday Night Wrist (2006), Diamond Eyes (2010), and their forthcoming studio ablum Koi No Yokan, everyone had their moment in which one of their favorite songs were played at some point during the night.
As I have said in the past, you know are seeing a good band when they connect with their audience, the band looks like they are having the time of their life, and they make it look easy. The Deftones nailed each one during their performance at Ram’s Head Live.
