Santarchy DC participants sing Christmas carols in front of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery on Saturday, December 17, 2011 in Washington, DC.
Santarchy is a yearly event that takes place all over the world in most major cities. Thousands of people get dressed up as Santa Claus and as elves to give gifts, sing Christmas carols, and to spread holiday cheer.
Hundreds of area Santa’s participated in Santarchy DC 2011.
If one decided to participate in Santarchy DC, there were a general set of “Santa Rules” one was asked to follow. Some of the rules participants were asked to follow included: being jolly, cooperating with secret service agents (because Santa doesn’t break laws), holiday apparel is mandatory (creativity is encouraged), and lastly Santa must be “a-Political because Santa does not protest anything (besides sh%&$* office holiday parties), and will not be “occupying” anything (except the North Pole)”.
In addition to the “Santa Rules”, all Santa’s were reminded to not make children cry, not to whine, to bring gifts to give, pay your own bar tab (yes, Santa needs a break too), and to remember if asked “What organization are you with?”, or “Who’s in charge?” to respond by saying Santa.
Below are the faces of a few of the many Santa’s that provided holiday cheer around the district during Santarchy DC 2011.
