Wiz Khalifa performs at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, MD on Monday, December 27, 2010.
Wiz Khalifa’s Waken & Baken tour stopped at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, MD on Monday night for the first of two sold out shows. Last week, Khalifa performed two sold out shows at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.
Although he has lived around the United States and the world, Wiz Khalifa spent most of his teen years in Pittsburgh, PA. To some, Khalifa’s current popularity and success seemed to come over night. His hit single Black & Yellow, which is currently #9 on the Billboard Charts, is one of the most played songs on hip hop and r& b radio. The release of his free mixtape Kush and Orange Juice earlier this year added to his popularity too. Fans of Khalifa downloaded the mixtape in mass and made it a top trending topic on Twitter with the hash tag #kushandorangejuice.
With that said, Wiz Khalifa has been paying his dues in the music business for 5+ years. He released his first mixtape, Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania in 2005 and his first album Show and Prove in 2006. Following the release of his first album, he released two additional mixtapes in 2007, Grow Season and Prince of the City 2. Both mixtapes were released through Rostrum Records. 2007 was also the year that Khalifa signed to Warner Brothers Records.
After signing to Warner Brothers, Khalifa continued to release mixtapes through Rostrum Records, Star Power in 2008 and Flight School, How Fly & Burn After Rolling in 2009. He also released his second album Deal or No Deal on Rostrum Records in 2009.
The relationship he had with Warner Brothers was short lived. After delays in releasing his first album on the label, he parted ways with the label in 2009.
In the summer of 2010, Wiz Khalifa & Rostrum Records signed a deal with Atlantic Records. His debut album on the label is slated to be released in 2011.
