The Liberty Reservoir Watershed, also known as Liberty Lake, photographed on Sunday, October 25, 2009.
The Liberty Reservoir covers 9,200-acres and is located in western Baltimore County and eastern Carroll County. Most of the water that makes its way into the reservoir comes from the north branch of the Patapsco River. All though both Baltimore and Carroll County are home to the reservoir, the reservoir is owned and managed by the City of Baltimore. A 12.7-mile long, 10-foot diameter tunnel guides the water to the Ashburton Water Filtration Plant for treatment in Baltimore City.
According to the Libetry Reservoir Watershed website, the area is open to hiking, rowing or paddle boating, bird watching, horseback riding and nature photography year-round, and for archery hunting during a regulated season. The reservoir is also managed for warm, cool, and cold water fish species and offers excellent fishing opportunities.
